Filming/not actually Blog

Despite the title of this blog, there was no filming done this weekend. When we were in school on Thursday, we planned on filming on the weekend. We were going to meet up at lauderdale by the sea’s beach and then film there. This was because they had the perfect scenery we imagined for our video. However, once it became Friday, we had some trouble on planning what time we should all to to the beach to film, because everyone in our group had different things they were doing. Andrew has to go to work on Saturday, so if we did it then he wouldn’t be there. Adriana was supposed to bring her two friends because they are the ones staring in our project. This was just more people to match our schedules with, which made it more difficult. And then Ben, the only flexible person, can go whenever. That’s on the bright side, i’m able to go pretty much whenever as well.

Right now i’m slightly worried about how our music video is going to come out because we can’t seem to find the right date for everyone to meet up together. This could make us have to revert to another plan. The problem is, our storyboard is planned by having two people meet with each other and we show a romance kind-of story. Because we can’t find a guy to participate in our video seriously, we might have to do a lesbian romance instead. This is actually fine because we can use that to make an even better background story, maybe involving homophobic parents. We could show off the hardships that gay people have to go though in this country. Weird stares from around, unable to show public displays of affection, etc. We could use the song to portray an even deeper meaning if this is what we decide to do. However, this would make the video more difficult which means we would have to probably film more than once. This creates the same problem because then we would have to find not one but two dates that all of us could meet up together.

I may try to find anyone that could be in our video to make it more similar to our original plan just so we already have it organized and planned out. Our video is going to be a slight story but also have a very aesthetic look to it. We are going to try to match the mood of the video to the song, taking shifts and different beats into account. The song we chose, sunset lover, has a beat that could sway either sad to happy, so we can really play around with it and do what we think looks best. For some of the video, I might try to get some clips on a sunrise to put at the beginning to set the mood on the beach vid. We are going to have multiple small clips to put together an aesthetic story to hopefully impress whoever watches it. I really hope that our video ends up turning out good because not only do I want a good grade but I just want to be able to watch our video at the end and be like, wow we did really good. We are doing something different than most, so I hope we can make it something none of the teachers have seen yet.

Storyboard blog

The costumes that we will be using are bathing suits and hoodies. We are wearing these not for their intended use but to give of a hip look. it is used for the intended  Florida aesthetic. we will also be wearing sunglasses, flip flops and sandals. For the lighting of our music video, we will be relying largely on the sun. we also will have scenes in the dark so we will be using the white light from our phones. So the main source of our lighting will natural light.  For our cast (actors) we have the female protagonist which will be played by one of our members sister, (Kelly). She will be the one running around with the towel around her neck. The camera angles we will be using for the music video are going to be: wide shot,  pan, tilt, trunk shot, high angle shot, close ups and two people shots. for our male protagonist, we will be using our friend Sam. were giving g him a beach boy look. we will be using no beauty make up. sunblock will be used as our version of make up. we have a few props. we will be using towels, cars, the pier. we are mainly relying on the setting to tell our story. For our setting we will be at the Lauderdale by the sea beach. we will be under the fishing pier for a large portion of the music video. The editing of the video will be done by our most experienced member (Ben) on his iBUYPOWER Gaming Desktop Trace2 97K80 Intel Core i7 9th Gen 9700K (3.60 GHz) 32 GB DDR4 2 TB HDD 480 GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Windows 10. The sounds of the video besides the music will have some ocean sounds in the beginning/ intro. The purpose of this to to lock in the tone of the music video. Because the music has no lyrics, the message the video gives off has to be based on the visual and instrumental, not the words.

Planning blog

The location for out music video is very flexible as the song we chose is instrumental. We thought of the idea to do a sunrise/ sunset type of vibe. We also thought that if that doesn't work out for some reason that a rainy day would work too. The song we chose can be interpreted in many different ways therefore we can work it any way. Our preferred location would be the beach and if not an open large field. Health and safety would be mostly considered for our car shots. We also need to make sure that the beach is safe for use. We want to make sure we are not in the way of any beach goers and get their permission if we need them in the video.

Our biggest props would be a car and some lifeguard stands. Of course we are not going to specifically buy any of these items for our music video as we already have access to them. We would also need some beach towels, sunglasses, stick/drone to get high shots. Costumes for our music video would some "typical Floridian". Some shorts and a tank top or a bathing suit as we are going for a "beach vibe". Anything that is considered beach or beach like clothing.

Our schedule for the music video would go as follows. By the 21st of November we needed to decide our location which we have already. By the 25th of November we want to have most if not all of our filming finished and documented (pt.1). By the 2nd of December the pt.2 of the last completion process should be finished. Filming would be done and clips would be decided on and placed in order to be edited. By the 9th of December our music video would be needed to be fully complete with added sound and full editing etc. Lastly, by the 11th of December the final assessment and analysis of our music video would be complete and wed wrap up the project.

Intro to music video

After we finally submitted our commercial, we had yet another project to begin working on. This project was called: the music video project. For this we have to pick an already-created song and make the music video for it. We do not have do change the song at all, we just have to create a story behind the song and act it out. We wanted to choose a creative song, one we could choose the story for. We had a very difficult time doing this because most songs already have a story that they are telling. Eventually, we asked our teachers if we could use a song that had to lyrics, just a cool beat. They approved this idea which made us able to choose a good song we could create our own story for. This led to finding the song: Sunset Loved.

The song we chose is called Sunset Lover by Petit Biscuit. The song is not extremely popular, and neither is the artist, however developing a concept for the song was rather easy. The song doesn't have words, making it more instrumental, but has a type of beat that can be used to create a good story. Due to the fact that the song is so instrumental is has a strong beat that can portray a sad situation or something really happy. My team and I decided to go with a beachy concept of teens having fun during the summer, driving around, enjoying their time and watching the sunset go by.
This song would fall into a mix of EDM music but mostly Tropical house or vapor wave. To set up the feeling and theme we want for our music video we want to make sure that we accomplish six things.

For the vapor wave genre:
1st- The costumes, are very retro, modern and a somewhat neo-noir style.
2nd- The lighting, very bright positive colors like what would be in a sunset, also giving a mellow tone.
3rd - The Acting, is a calm non hyper-feeling.
4th- The Makeup, there is minimal makeup done in this genre. It doesn't focus on the looks of the actors.
5th- The props, skate boards, bikes, and other things that you would normal use and see as calming
6th- The scenery, is a beach-like late afternoon early night.

Final editing blog

Today we did the final editing for our commercial. The first thing we did was import all of the clips we recorded onto the computer. This took a very long amount of time, which made us have a very short amount of time to work on it, especially since it was a half day. After importing, we had to select which clips we wanted to use. I was very picky about this because i was in the video and i didn’t want it to look bad. There were a lot of clips we had to choose from, thankfully. We were very relieved that we took a lot of shots, it made it much easier to put our video together. A lot of clips had minor issues in them either with the visual or the audio, this made us think more about using voiceovers. We did have enough takes that were fine to use, therefore we did not have to improvise. We then took our selected clips and edited them together. We tried to do the best we could with the slow computers that didn’t work very well.

We began to edit them by dragging one clip onto the other. We needed to make the end of the first clip touch the beginning of the second clip, so it blended together as one smooth video. We ended up needing to remove a lot of the footage because the clips were way too long. We did this by clipping scene by scene to the perfect length. Once we had the clips shortened and pasted together we had to begin working with the audio. Most of what we had recorded originally was what we were going to use. However, a few of the clips needed to be re recorded for the audio. We had to import the new audio we recorded today. It was the same process as importing the visual clips. Then we began messing with the audio, dun dun dunnn..

Under the visual clip line there is a little audio clip line. We took the audio clip and trimmed it down to match the visual, since we removed some footage. Then, we inserted the audio into the audio line for the scene. Another issued we had to deal with was the narration/voiceover. We recorded voiceover for the slogan of the commercial. Doing this was rather easy, as all we needed to do was play the audio over a picture of the Gatorade bottle itself. Next we had to insert a picture of the Gatorade logo at the end. After we finished all the editing we watched the almost-final product. We noticed the speed of the voiceover didn't match the clip it was on, which really sucked! We ended up figurines out how to speed up the audio without speeding up the visual. The sad thing is whenever you have to speed up the audio it doesn’t sound as authentic, but hopefully we can make it work.
